5-Day Itinerary from Marrakech to Merzouga

Explore the High Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, and the Merzouga Desert on this 5-day adventure.

1

Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Ait Ben Haddou → Skoura

Your private 5-day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga starts in Marrakech, where you will meet your driver in the morning. On the first leg of the journey, you will travel through the High Atlas Mountains, where you can enjoy the most beautiful landscapes of Tizi Tichka Pass, which reaches an altitude of 2260m above sea level.

The mountain drive takes around 3-4 hours. On the road, you can enjoy the local food and visit the Kasbah Telouet, the seat of the El Glaoui family's power, sometimes called the Palace of Glaoui.

In the afternoon, continue driving through Berber villages and explore the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a Hollywood favorite filming location. Later, we drive southeast to Skoura Oasis, where you will spend the night in a tranquil Kasbah in the middle of the palm groves, including dinner and breakfast.

2

Day 2: Skoura Oasis → Rose Valley → Dades Valley

After your breakfast, we start our day exploring the Kasbah Amridil, a historic fortified residence or kasbah (tightest in Amazigh) in the oasis of Skoura in Morocco.

Your journey continues southeast to Dades Valley, where you'll meet your mountain guide. You'll hike in the Almond Valley, explore the impressive rock formations of the canyon, visit a Berber family and have tea with them, and learn about the Berber lifestyle. You'll also enjoy a picnic lunch in nature.

In the late afternoon, we head to our guest house in the valley, where you'll spend the night, including dinner and breakfast.

3

Day 3: Dades Valley → Todra Gorges → Merzouga Desert → Camel Ride & Night in the Camp

Today, after your breakfast, we head towards the Todra Gorge. The drive takes around 1 hour 30 minutes from our departure point. Arriving in the Valley of Todra, situated on the east side of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco, you can walk in the Todra Gorge, one of the world's most spectacular canyons and a top destination for hikers and rock climbers. Lunch is somewhere in the area.

4

Day 4: Merzouga Desert → Draa Valley → Agdz

Today, we leave the Desert behind and travel south. Our first stop will be Rissani, which is historically significant. It once marked the crossroads of the West African caravan routes and is the origin of the establishment of the Alaouite dynasty in the 17th century, which still holds power in Morocco today. In Rissani, you can visit the souk three times a week: Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

Here, you'll feel the true essence of Africa through the local people, the walk in its narrow alleys, and the local food you can try. In the afternoon, we drive around three hours on a desert road lined with giant acacia trees, stopping for beautiful pictures of the Draa Valley and volcanic rock formations. Upon arriving in Agdez, check in at your guesthouse, and take a relaxing walk in the Draa Valley. Overnight stay includes dinner and breakfast.

5

Day 5: Agdz → High Atlas Mountains → Marrakech

In the morning, your last leg begins as you drive from Agdez to Marrakech via the Anti-Atlas Mountains and Ouarzazate. Once more, you will cross the High Atlas Mountains and arrive at Marrakech in the afternoon, where your 5-day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga will end. Your driver will take you to your hotel, riad, or airport, where this 5-day desert tour concludes.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 5-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour

Find answers to the most common questions about our 5-day Morocco tour from Marrakech to Merzouga.

Is 5 days enough for a Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour?

Yes. Five days is an ideal length for a Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour. It gives you enough time to cross the High Atlas Mountains, visit Ait Ben Haddou, explore Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley, enjoy the Erg Chebbi dunes, and return at a relaxed pace through the Middle Atlas without feeling rushed.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to Merzouga?

The distance from Marrakech to Merzouga is approximately 560 km (348 miles). On this 5-day tour, the journey is divided into comfortable driving days with regular stops at scenic viewpoints, Berber villages, Ait Ben Haddou, Todra Gorge, and the Dades Valley, making the trip enjoyable rather than exhausting.

Is this a private tour or a shared group tour?

This is a private Morocco tour, so you'll travel only with your own family, friends, or group. Your driver/guide, schedule, and sightseeing stops can be adjusted to your interests, offering a more flexible and personalized experience than a shared group tour.

Is the camel ride included in the tour?

Yes. A sunset camel trek in the Erg Chebbi dunes is included. The ride usually lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours and takes you directly to the desert camp. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can arrange a 4x4 transfer instead.

What is the difference between Merzouga and Zagora?

Merzouga is part of the Sahara Desert and is famous for the tall golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, the classic Sahara landscape many travelers picture. Zagora is closer to Marrakech, but its dunes are smaller and the desert experience is shorter. If you want the iconic Sahara feel, Merzouga is the better choice.

What is the desert camp like?

Our desert camps include comfortable beds, private tents, electricity, dinner, breakfast, and clean bathroom facilities. Luxury camps also offer en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, and more spacious, well-decorated tents for added comfort.

What's included in the 5-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour?

The tour includes private transportation, an experienced English-speaking driver/guide, accommodation, a sunset camel trek, one night in a Sahara desert camp, daily breakfast, and dinners at your accommodations. Lunches, drinks, and entrance fees are generally not included unless stated in the tour details.

Are bathrooms and hot showers available in the desert camp?

Yes. Luxury camps have private bathrooms and hot showers inside each tent. Standard camps provide clean shared facilities nearby, often with warm water in the evenings powered by a generator. We'll confirm your exact camp setup before you book.

What should I pack for the Sahara Desert?

Bring comfortable clothes, layers for changing temperatures, a warm jacket for the evening, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat or scarf, and comfortable walking shoes. Desert nights can be surprisingly cold, especially from October to February, so a warm layer is essential.

Is the tour suitable for families and older travelers?

Yes. The tour is private and can be adapted to different ages and fitness levels. Camel rides are slow and fully guided, and 4x4 transfers are available for anyone who prefers not to ride, making the experience comfortable for families, children, and older travelers.

Are vegetarian or vegan meals available?

Absolutely. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements can be arranged with advance notice. Just let us know your preferences when booking, and we'll coordinate with restaurants and camps accordingly.

Is Wi-Fi available in the Sahara Desert?

Mobile signal is limited in some desert areas. Most luxury camps offer Wi-Fi in the common area, but the connection is often slower and less reliable than in the cities. We recommend treating this as a chance to disconnect and enjoy the starry skies.
