An overnight camel trek in Merzouga is the quintessential Sahara experience. You will ride a camel for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours deep into the Erg Chebbi dunes, the highest sand dunes in Morocco, reaching up to 150 meters. As the sun sets and paints the dunes in shades of gold and orange, you will arrive at a traditional Berber desert camp where a private tent, mint tea, and dinner await.
After dinner, gather around the campfire for live Berber drumming, stargaze in one of the darkest skies in North Africa, and fall asleep to the silence of the desert. Wake early the next morning to climb the nearest dune and watch a breathtaking Sahara sunrise before breakfast and your return camel ride.

16:30 — Meet at our guesthouse in the village of Hassi Labied (4 km from Merzouga center). Park your car securely, store your main luggage, and pack a small overnight bag with only what you need.
17:00 — Meet your camel and experienced guide. After a brief introduction on how to mount and sit comfortably, begin your camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. The ride lasts roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, with stops for photos of the camel caravan against the dunes.
18:15 — Pause on a high dune to watch the Sahara sunset. This is the perfect time for photography and optional sandboarding.
19:00 — Arrive at the desert camp. You will be shown to your private tent and served refreshing Moroccan mint tea.
20:00 — Dinner is served in the main tent or under the stars (weather permitting). Expect authentic dishes such as chicken or vegetable tagine, Moroccan salad, fresh bread, and seasonal fruit.
21:30 — After dinner, gather around the campfire for traditional Berber drumming and singing. Your hosts will share stories about nomadic life in the Sahara. Take a short walk away from the camp for incredible stargazing before bed.
Overnight — Sleep in your private tent with mattresses, blankets, and pillows provided.
06:00 — Wake early and climb the nearest dune to watch the Sahara sunrise. The changing colors over the sea of sand are unforgettable.
07:30 — Return to camp for a hearty Berber breakfast (bread, jam, olive oil, pancakes, coffee, and tea).
08:30 — Ride your camels back to Merzouga village, arriving around 09:30 AM.
09:30 — Collect your luggage, freshen up with a shower at the guesthouse, and continue your journey. End of service.

The camel trek takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours each way. You will stop for photos along the way and pause on a high dune to watch the sunset before continuing to camp.
Yes. When booked with a reputable local operator, the camels are well-cared for and the guides are experienced. The trek is done at a slow, comfortable pace. If you have concerns about animal welfare, we encourage you to ask questions — our camels are rested daily and treated as part of the family.
Wear long pants (jeans or linen) to avoid skin irritation on the camel, and closed-toe shoes with a back strap (sandals are not ideal). Bring a warm jacket or fleece for the evening — desert temperatures drop significantly after sunset. Also pack sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a small flashlight, a power bank, and a refillable water bottle. If you wear contact lenses, bring glasses instead — the desert air can be dusty.
No. Your private tent includes a comfortable bed with mattresses, blankets, and pillows. Standard camps provide warm bedding sufficient for most seasons.
Private. Each couple gets their own tent. Families are accommodated in adjacent tents (parents in one, children in another, or together depending on preference). You will never be asked to share with strangers.
Yes. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can arrange a free 4WD transfer from Merzouga village directly to the camp. You will still enjoy the same dinner, campfire, and sunrise experience.
For most travelers, one night is perfect — you get the sunset, stargazing, campfire, and sunrise without feeling rushed. If you want a deeper desert immersion, quieter dunes, and more time for photography or meditation, a 2-night trek is worth considering.
Dinner is typically a traditional Moroccan tagine (chicken, beef, or vegetable), served with bread, salad, and fruit. Breakfast includes bread, jam, olive oil, pancakes, coffee, and tea. We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets if you inform us at least 24 hours in advance.
Most standard camps have no WiFi and limited phone signal — part of the magic is disconnecting. Some luxury camps offer WiFi, but it is often slow and unreliable. We recommend downloading anything you need beforehand and embracing the digital detox.
Some camps sell beer or wine for purchase, but it is not included in the price. If alcohol is important to your evening, please ask us in advance so we can confirm camp availability or advise you to buy in Merzouga village before departure.
October to April is ideal, with daytime temperatures of 15–25°C and cool nights. Summers (June–August) can exceed 45°C and are not recommended for camel trekking. March can bring occasional sandstorms, so flexibility helps.
Prices typically range from €60 to €120 per person depending on the season, group size, and whether you choose a standard or luxury camp. Our €60 starting rate is for the standard private camp; luxury upgrades with ensuite bathrooms are available on request.

A wonderful trip into the desert on camels. We stayed in the basic camp which was surprisingly comfortable, sang songs around the fire, and tried sandboarding down the dunes. Our guide went out of his way to surprise my partner with a cake to celebrate her birthday — completely unexpected and so thoughtful. Everything worked to plan and was reasonably priced compared to other companies we looked at. Would absolutely use this team again.

I was left speechless for most of the trip — just in awe of the desert's beauty. Even though we had heavy rain and thunderstorms at night (which is rare!), the team made sure we were comfortable, dry, and safe at all times. Our driver was incredibly kind and thoughtful, and his driving through the mountain passes was superb. The camp staff were attentive without being intrusive. It was still the most memorable night of our entire Morocco trip.

The overall experience was extremely pleasant. Even though the camp was at low capacity — just me and my friend — they spared no expense to make our stay special. We had an impressive amount of freedom to explore the dunes alone, but the guides were always nearby when we needed them.
